House of Virgin Mary

On the peak of Nightingale Hill, wrapped in green serenity, stands the small stone house where tradition says Mary spent her final years.

Seven kilometers from Selcuk, on the peak of Mount Koressos — locals say "Nightingale Hill" — a small stone house sits in deep green forest. Catholic tradition holds that the Virgin Mary, entrusted to Saint John at the cross, came to Ephesus with him and lived her last years here.

The story of its discovery is itself remarkable. Anne Catherine Emmerich, a bedridden German nun and visionary who never left Westphalia, described the house's location and appearance in visions published after her death. In the 1890s, expeditions following her directions found exactly such ruins, exactly there. The Vatican has never formally pronounced on authenticity, but it granted the shrine its blessing — and three popes, Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, came in person to pray.

Visiting the shrine

The house today is a chapel, restored with its ancient foundations visible. Below it flows a spring whose water pilgrims collect, and beside the path a wishing wall carries thousands of tied papers and ribbons — hopes in every language. Mass is celebrated regularly, and on the 15th of August the Assumption service draws pilgrims from around the world.

What surprises many visitors is who they meet: Muslims venerate Mary too, and the shrine welcomes every faith. The atmosphere under the pines — five minutes' drive from the crowds of Ephesus and a world away in silence — persuades even the most secular guest that this hill is, at minimum, a very good place to be quiet.
