How do you get from Istanbul to Ephesus? By air. The two are well over 500 km apart by road — too far for a day — but Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and AJet fly Istanbul to Izmir many times a day, the flight takes about an hour, and Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport is roughly 60 km, or 45 minutes, from the gates of Ephesus. Fly out early, fly back in the evening, and the most complete Roman city in the Mediterranean fits between breakfast and dinner.
The rhythm is simple and proven. You board an early flight from either Istanbul airport; an hour later your licensed local guide is holding a name sign at Izmir arrivals. Forty-five minutes after that you walk through the upper gate of Ephesus with the morning still fresh and the tickets already in your guide's hand — Odeon, Curetes Street, the Library of Celsus, the Great Theater, and the Terrace Houses if you wish, all before lunch.
