Holland America in Kusadasi: Ephesus at an Easy Pace

Ephesus is a walk of about 1.5 km on ancient marble, and how it feels depends on direction, hour and pace. Oosterdam arrives at 07:00 on nine of her ten calls, early enough for the cool of the morning; the direction and the pace are what we plan with you.

Is Ephesus manageable at an easy pace?

For most guests who can walk slowly for a couple of hours with rests, yes, and the secret is direction. Enter at the Upper Gate, near the Magnesia Gate in the photo above, and the route runs about 1.5 km, mostly downhill, to the lower gate, where your car waits: no climb back. With pauses it takes two to three hours.

Shade is scarce on the open streets, so the early calls help: the site opens at 08:00 every day, and the first hours are the coolest. Your guide times the rests to shaded spots and benches scouted in advance.

Where are the steps at Ephesus, and can you skip them?

• Curetes Street. The main descent to the Library of Celsus is a steady slope of worn marble, uneven and slippery in places. Take it slowly, in shoes with good grip.
• The Terrace Houses. Beside Curetes Street, under a protective roof, a walkway climbs through the Roman villas on stairs. They add about 45 minutes and a separate ticket; skip them, or take them at your own speed.
• The Library of Celsus forecourt. Marble steps rise to the facade and the square is uneven underfoot, but the classic view is from the square itself, so there is no need to climb.
• The Great Theater. Its seats rise in steep stone rows. From the level ground at its foot you see it whole; climbing is a choice, not part of the route.
• The way out. From the theater a fairly level road leads to the lower gate and the car.

How does an easy-pace day fit an Oosterdam call?

Take a summer Friday in 2027, when Oosterdam is alongside from 07:00 to 18:00. Our Ephesus tour for elder travelers (4–5 hours, relaxed) fits comfortably:

1. Leave the ship when it suits you: early for the coolest hours, or a little later for a calmer gangway.
2. Meet your guide, name sign in hand, at the terminal exit on the town side; the Upper Gate is a 20–30 minute drive, up to 45 when the port is at its busiest.
3. Walk downhill past the Odeon, down Curetes Street to the Library of Celsus and on to the Great Theater: about 1.5 km over roughly two unhurried hours.
4. Step into the car at the lower gate for a sit-down lunch and, if you have the energy, the House of the Virgin Mary, reached on short, level paths.
5. Head back to the pier in the afternoon, on a plan worked backward from the all-aboard time in the ship’s daily program.

A helper can come along to offer a steady arm on uneven marble. For wheelchair users the route changes: we enter at the lower gate, see the lower city and come back out through the same gate, because the full walk from the Upper Gate is not wheelchair friendly and the Terrace Houses, reached only by stairs and steel walkways, are not accessible. When is Holland America in Kusadasi?

Oosterdam or Volendam: which berth, and what about November?

Oosterdam (Vista class, 285.24 m) makes ten of the eleven calls. She fits Ege Port’s berths 1–2 (up to 300 m), 5–6 (up to 331 m) and 7–8 (up to 387 m), but not 3–4, which stop at 253 m. Volendam, at 237.7 m, fits them all. The port allocates berths each day, and every pier ends at the exit in the photo below.

Volendam’s single call, on Monday 2 November 2026, runs from 08:00 to 21:00, the longest Holland America call on the list. By November Ephesus is usually on winter hours, 08:00 to 18:00 with the last ticket at 17:30, so see it in the morning and keep the evening for the ship or a slow stroll along the seafront.

What are Holland America’s own Ephesus excursions?

The line is candid about walking. It rates Ephesus & the Terrace Houses as strenuous, mentions uneven surfaces, inclines and many steps, and offers a separate Accessible Ephesus & Seven Wonders Temple of Artemis tour for guests who need it. It provides accessible arrangements “to the extent that is feasible” and, as vehicles abroad often lack wheelchair lifts, asks guests to contact its shore excursion team early (Holland America’s accessibility FAQ).
