Seabourn in Kusadasi: Ephesus by Day, the Evening Reception by Night

Seabourn gives Kusadasi a long day: all three calls on the schedules run from 08:00 to 23:00. On voyages that include it, the evening belongs to Seabourn’s own Ephesus Evening Reception, which leaves the daylight for everything a concert cannot show you.

What is Seabourn’s Ephesus Evening Reception?

It is Seabourn’s complimentary shore event at this port, and it is entirely theirs: we have no part in it. As Seabourn describes it, guests have an early dinner on board, then ride a coach for about 30 minutes to the upper gate of Ephesus. Refreshments are served at bistro tables set out along an ancient marble road, and a chamber orchestra plays classical music in the Odeon, which is reserved for Seabourn guests. Seabourn gives its length as about 3 hours, and the coach back to the pier again takes about 30 minutes (Seabourn’s page for the Ephesus Evening Reception).

Three details from that page shape the rest of your day. First, Seabourn says plainly that the reception is not a visit of the ancient site; the concert simply takes place in the Odeon, inside it. Second, it rates the evening as moderate activity, over uneven ground and worn steps without handrails, and says it is not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or with limited mobility; the Destinations team on board can advise on options. Third, it suggests a jacket or sweater, because nights can be cool.

The schedules do not say which voyages include the reception, so check your own voyage before you plan around it. If yours does not, the whole day and evening are free for Ephesus and Kusadasi.

How does a private day fit before the evening at the Odeon?

Spend the daylight on what the evening leaves out, and be back on board in good time to rest and change before the early dinner. Tell us the departure time Seabourn gives for the reception coaches and the all-aboard time for the call; we set the whole day backward from them. 1. Off the ship. Your guide waits at the terminal exit where the pier meets the town, holding a sign with your name, from the 08:00 arrival.
2. Ephesus by daylight. About 20–30 minutes to the Upper Gate, which opens at 08:00. Pass the Odeon briefly, since you may be sitting in it tonight, and give the time to Curetes Street, the Library of Celsus and a seat high up in the Great Theater: about 1.5 km downhill, 2–3 hours.
3. The Terrace Houses. Roughly 45 minutes more, on a separate EUR 15 ticket: painted walls, mosaic floors and conservation work going on under a protective roof, in the homes of the city’s wealthiest families.
4. Selcuk in the afternoon. The Ephesus Museum, where the statues of Artemis and the finds from the Terrace Houses are kept, then St. John’s Basilica on Ayasuluk Hill and the lone column of the Temple of Artemis below it.
5. Back on board with the rest of the afternoon to yourself before dinner and the evening coaches.

The Archaeological Ephesus tour spends longer in the ruins and the Terrace Houses, and can add the Ephesus Museum on request. Why give Ephesus more than a morning?

Because it rewards slow looking. Most of the ancient city is still under the ground, and the parts above it make sense only with time and a guide who can read them: why the harbor silted up, how the facade of the Library of Celsus was built to look grander than its narrow site, how a column can be dated by its capital. On a short call these become a single photo stop. On a fifteen-hour Seabourn call you can stand at each one for as long as it holds you.

The Terrace Houses are the clearest case: rooms of painted plaster and marble floors where you can picture the dinner parties. The Ephesus Museum in Selcuk then gives faces to the city: the great statues of Artemis, found buried near the Prytaneion, and the objects from those same houses. St. John’s Basilica stands over the tomb venerated as the apostle’s, with Ayasuluk Fortress above it, open to visitors, and the Temple of Artemis in the field below. And the Great Theater is worth sitting in rather than photographing: its acoustics still carry a voice to the upper rows.

Which pier will a Seabourn ship use in Kusadasi?

Seabourn’s ships moor at Ege Port, whose address is Mahmut Esat Bozkurt Caddesi No. 20, Camikebir Mahallesi, right on the town’s waterfront. At about 198 m (Seabourn Quest) and 210 m (Seabourn Ovation), both ships are shorter than the smallest berth limit at the port, 253 m at berths 3–4, so any of the eight berths along the two finger piers can take them; the port decides on the day.
