Then the panoramic drive itself: past the upper entrance of the ancient city, with the Odeon, the cistern and the ruins of the upper quarter unrolling beside your window as your guide points out what each one was. Next the Basilica of Saint John on Ayasuluk Hill, where we stop at the gate for photographs and the full story of the apostle buried beneath it. Then the Temple of Artemis — where you step out and walk the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World — and, if you wish, the beautiful fourteenth-century Isa Bey Mosque in Selcuk. The day closes with lunch and a local artisan visit, where traditional Turkish handcrafts are made by hand while you eat.
